As a general rule, please do not send me copies of follow-up messages or new questions via private e-mail. Instead, post such messages to the appropriate newsgroup. There are a number of reasons why I prefer this:
  • There are a number of subjects that I am not very familiar with. Just because I understand Swing does not mean I know much about CORBA. If you send a question directly to me, you might be sending your question to a novice.

  • If you send a question to me alone, then it will not be seen by other people who may know more about the subject than I, or who may have useful information to add.

  • If I were to reply to a private e-mail question, then only you would see the answer. But if you post the question on a newsgroup, and I or someone else answers the question, then others can learn from the exchange as well.
It is not necessary to send me a copy of messages that you do post to the newsgroups. I read the newsgroups regularly and generally read all of the messages, so I will see the message then. Copies of newsgroup messages just fill up my e-mail and slow me down.

Given the above considerations, if you have a reason to send me an e-mail message, by all means do. It is not that I do not want to hear from anyone; I just want the communication to be effective, and I want to conserve my limited time.

If you do send me an e-mail message, send it to:

JPMcGrath@JPMcGrath.net.
If you just reply to a newsgroup message, it goes to a different address and will end up in a bin with all of the spam that I get as a result of newsgroup posts (and unfortunately, I get a lot of that). I do go through this bin, so I will probably see it eventually, but I might miss it.

Thanks,
